Map availability and access

The Orienteering Queensland has handed many of its maps over to the local clubs, who may not hold stock. The list below begins with OQ maps which are still available from the OQ Mapping Officer.

How to get hold of orienteering maps near you

There are a number of ways to get current and accurate maps that are suitable for use by school students. In order of ease and map quality:

1. Find an existing Orienteering map

Find an existing Orienteering Queensland map from the 'school use' map database here. Colour printed copies will generally cost you $2 each. If the map is not of your own school you will need to obtain land owner clearance to use the area. A key to the data shown in the map database is listed below.

2. Get one made of your school

If you have $200 - $500 in funding available you can invest in having a professional map made of your school. A number of mappers are available to make maps for schools and their contact details are listed below:

3. Make your own

Obtain or make an existing map of your school ground. You can do this by seeing your school business manager and seeing if a copy of the school drainage or building plan is on file that can be used. Alternately you can go to Google maps or Nearmap (www.nearmap.com) and capture an air photo image of your school and use it as a base to trace your own. This can be time consuming and unless you incorporate an existing base map with contour data you will not have contour lines (height information) on your map. For simple maps, particularly at primary level this is not important, unless you have some very steep areas in your school grounds. For school maps the best scales to use are 1:3000 (1cm = 30m), 1:4000 (1cm = 40m) or 1:5000 (1cm – 50m) depending on school size.
