Lilian Burrill (BBB) and Heather Muir (EN) have both been selected in the Australian team to contest this year's Junior World Orienteering Championships as the result of some great performances at the Australian 3 Days held over Easter and at the subsequent National Orienteering League events in Brisbane last weekend. Lilian won the W17-20E class at Easter while Heather finished up third overall.
It will be Lilian's fourth time in the junior team while Heather will be making her debut. Only four girls were selected out of a possible team of 6 with the Queenslanders joining Amy Buckerfield of Tasmania and Michele Dawson from NSW on the team. No Queenslanders made the 5 person boys team for the Championships.
JWOC will be held this year in Slovakia from 7 - 14 July.
Congratulations to both girls for some fine performances and on their selection!

Presented by Orienteering Queensland
The Enogerroos, Ugly Gully and Tooheys Forest orienteering clubs are pleased to present the Urban Night Nav running series. This new series is designed for elite and
social runners, orienteers and adventure racers looking for either a hard weekly training event or a social outing during Brisbane’s beautiful evening climate. Families are most welcome. Key features of the series are:
For those familiar with the Street-O series, the format is similar but with better coordinated event timing; so events run by TF and Enoggeroos are now at different times of the year and there will be many new Street maps from Ugly Gully in the inner West (Toowong, Paddington, Ashgrove, St Lucia areas). The series is now to run May to December so a longer series that can be planned as either part of a training schedule or regular enough to attract other runners and newcomers during what is traditionally the Brisbane running season.

Two of Queensland's elite junior female orienteers are on track for selection in the Australian team for the Junior World Orienteering Championships which are to be held in Slovakia in July, following a three stage National Orienteering League event held in Ballarat over the weekend. The event was also one of the selection races for the Australian team.
In the Sprint event held at the Ballarat University on Saturday morning, rising star Heather Muir (EN) of Bridgeman Downs came first in the Junior Elite Women's class in 13.37mins, closely followed by Warwick's Lilian Burrill (BBB) in 13.51mins who has been an Australian representative for the last three years. In that afternoon's 4km Middle Distance race in a complex gold mining area at Surface Hill, Lilian came second in 41.50 mins and Heather third in 42.59 mins.
Their positions were reversed in the Long Distance race on Sunday at Chinaman Flat, with Lilian winning the 10.3km event in a time of 96.05mins and Heather being placed second in 103.31mins
Senior elite competitor, Rachel Effeney (UG) of The Gap, showed her running speed in winning the Sprint race on Saturday by a 1 second margin. She was placed 4th in the afternoon's Middle Distance race and 5th in the next day's Long Distance race.
The full results can be found on www.orienteering.asn.au. Check out a video of the women's mass start in the long distance here.
As predicted the hilly, forested stage 5 saw many people lose major time. Rachel Effeney lost the leaders yellow jersey and the leading 4 men, including 2nd placed Oscar McNulty (WA) plummeted down the order.
In a drama packed last stage Rachel started 8 seconds in arrears of Angela Simpson (NZ). In this last stage the 2 leaders started together but did two initial loops in different orders before coming together with the same controls to the finish. When Rachel punched at the final control and Angela wasn't in view the commentator declared her the victor. Afterwards it was found that Angela had missed the first control and another leading contender, Greta Knudsen had unfortunately taken a men’s course map, resulting in a DNF for both. Lizzie Ingham, the fastest on stage 6, took 2nd place overall.
An outstanding result for Rachel against quality opposition. She won the first 4 stages and then was 6th and 2nd today. Runner-up Lizzie Ingham was 11th in the sprint at WOC 2011. Angela Simpson was 6th in the World Universities sprint in 2010; again 6th in sprint at Jwoc 2011 and won STD last year. Rachel qualified for the final and was 35th in her WOC debut in the sprint last year.
The Cyclones Summer Series has now been completed - check out the results! Congratulations to everyone who competed. The Cyclones are now looking forward to the start of the 'bush' season and the first national league event in Ballarat, Victoria on March 10/11.

A merry contingent traveled down to the Newcastle area for five days of competitive but social orienteering between Xmas and New Years. One of the more fun aspects of the Xmas carnival is competitors can enter any of an A (elite) to E (short) class providing an opportunity for older, younger, male and female orienteers to run on the same courses. Also as a refreshing change, formats are varied. This year included a Mass-start on Day 4 and Head to Head racing in a loop style course on Day 5. Read more ........
