What is Park Orienteering?

It offers the opportunity to enjoy pleasant parkland surroundings. It provides the fun and challenge of navigating your way around the parklands using a map & premarked course.
What are permanent courses?
These provide a different type of orienteering. You can do them at any time that suits you, rather than a specific event times. All you need is the map which has the course marked on it; all the instructions to get started are on the back of the map.
Where are these located?
Permanent Courses have been set up at:
- City Botanic Gardens
- Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens
- Roma St Parklands
- Victoria Parklands
- Springfield Lakes

Wheel Chair Friendly / Accessible courses have been developed for wheel chair access. These are located at:
- City Botanic Gardens
- Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens
- Roma St Parklands
Are these courses suitable for me?
The courses are suitable for newcomers to orienteering - for family groups, active young people through to over 60's.
- They are suitable for newcomers to orienteering through to those who have done it before (at orienteering events)... beginners to intermediate level.
- They are suitable for all levels of fitness... from walkers to joggers.
- You can choose different length courses to suit your fitness.
- Wheel Chair Friendly courses are also available; these are clearly identified.

What are the benefits?
Permanent O courses provide:
- Enjoyment of the outdoors & parklands
- Healthy activity & exercise
- Fun & challenge of navigating around a course ( easy standard)
- The opportunity to do it at any time and at your own pace

Getting Started
- Select a venue
- Pick a suitable course from the table (this will allow you to download the map)
- Read & accept "Safety & Responsibility Information" to proceed
- Click on the map to download it map from the website; the file has the map on the front & "how to do it" instructions on the back (along with control descriptions & questions)
- Print out the map in colour (select double sided, so the instructions are printed on the back)
- Follow the orienteering instructions on the back
Safety & Responsibility
YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR OWN SAFETY:
- Children MUST be accompanied by an adult
- Roads: TAKE CARE crossing roads & do not walk or run on roads
- Water: On hot days it is advisable to drink fluids before, during and after the course; Water tap locations are shown on the maps (blue X)
