Welcome to Orienteering Queensland

Orienteering is a great family sport, catering for young children right through to grandparents, for the super fast and not so fast, for the competitive and not so competitive.

Those new to the sport are most welcome to participate in any of the events listed on the events calendar and we provide information on the basic map reading and navigational skills at all events.

Orienteering in Queensland can be done on foot (Foot Orienteering) or on Mountain Bike (Mountain biking orienteering)
For more information, look at About Orienteering, particularly Getting Started.

Two Queensland Riders in Australian MTBO Teams

May 06, 2013 12:54pm | News

Chris Firman (EN) and Karl Withers (MT) have been named in the Australian teams selected to contest this year's World Mountain Bike Orienteering Championships
in Estonia in August.

After being a three time representative at the junior level, Chris has made it into his first senior team, joining three other men to represent Australia.

Chris was placed 1st in the elite men's Sprint race at the selection trials held in Victoria on 27 and 28 April, came 4th in the Middle Distance race and was 3rd in the Long Distance race, despite still recovering from a broken collar bone injury.

Karl made his first junior team last year and joins two other riders to represent Australia again this year after recording a 5th in the Sprint, a 2nd in the Middle Distance race and a 3rd in the Long Distance race at the selection trials.

Both riders have been competing regularly in mountain bike as well as MTBO races and their commitment to improving their fitness as well as their technical skills has now been rewarded. Orienteering Queensland congratulates them both on their selection and wishes them all the best for their training and competition for the coming months.

Elite Orienteers - What Goes Through Their Mind?

April 17, 2013 08:32pm | News

Here is your chance to to hear from a few of our top orienteers:

Sunday 28th of April 3-5pm

Mikko Salonen is the new Foot Orienteering Commission Chairman for the International Orienteering Federation. He has been orienteering since he was 7 and has won several Finnish championship medals. He has also held roles both as president and general manager of the Finnish Orienteering Federation. Mikko keeps our much younger men on their toes here in Queensland! Unfortunately, the Salonen family will be leaving us in June, so this is your last chance to hear some words from him.

Geoff Peck was one of the best British orienteers for more than a decade in the 1970's. He held the best British individual men's WOC Long distance result of 11th ( 1972 at Czech) for 32 years! He represented Great Britain at WOC from 1968 - 1981 and consistently placed under 26th in the individual distance and was part of the British relay team on the 2 occasions when they placed 6th. He won numerous British championships and was also involved in coaching of the British national orienteering team. He is a legend....

Anna Sheldon was part of the Australian team for JWOC in 1998, 2000 & 2001 and for WOC in 2006 and 2007, where she achieved her best individual long distance result of 30th in Ukraine. She achieved the rare double and also represented Australia in MTBO and was part of the bronze medal relay team in 2004 and achieved an 8th place in the individual long distance event in Slovakia in 2005. She also won a silver medal in the European MTBO champs that year. She is presently part of the Queensland Cyclones and is involved with coaching of our juniors. She is definitely one of our most accomplished Qld orienteer.
